After properly installing the Connector. You should see new Multimedia schema in your CM similar to

ExternalContentLibraryStubSchema

Refer this Multimedia schema in your Content Schema.

To add images, you need to select image from SDL Media Manager, shown in below pic (Assuming you already have images uploaded in SDL MM)

that all you need to refer a image in component. no manual ecl management required.

To play with ECL directly. You need to use Tridion.ExternalContentLibrary.V2 Get the below mentioned required Dlls from your Tridion Installation bin or GAC (either one of these)

• Tridion.ExternalContentLibrary.V2.dll
• Tridion.ExternalContentLibrary.dll
• Tridion.ExternalContentLibrary.Service.Client.dll
